Douglas Cook Centre for Education

The Douglas Cook Centre for Education, opened in 1992, aims to provide an excellent facility for education and scientific research, combining accommodation, library and other facilities at Eastwoodhill Arboretum.

Discovery and learning are central to Eastwoodhill's mission. The arboretum offers the perfect classroom with over 3,500 different tree and shrub species, natural areas, and the Homestead Garden that features contemporary plant and landscape design.

We welcome you to explore the story of Douglas Cook's landscape, and the amazing collection of plants through a self-guided tour, brochures and handouts to take home. Alternatively, bring a group and reserve an Arboretum Tour with one of our highly trained guides.

Tertiary institutions regularly make use of facilities for practical study in a variety of courses such as amenity horticulture, botany, landscaping, arboriculture, and resource management. These practical study groups range from one to seven days depending on course requirements. Remaining on site enables students to gain additional knowledge out of the course structure timetables.

School groups, including preschool, primary and secondary schools are encouraged so that students can study the wide variety of plant and bird life in the arboretum enjoying the many features of the four seasons.

Adult educational groups are encouraged to come to the arboretum and make use of the facilities for workshops, seminars, and retreats.

The future of Education at Eastwoodhill

Future plans to encourage the widest possible participation in the arboretum by those with an interest in trees, gardening, horticulture, and arboriculture, include employment of an education officer who will work towards creating educational programs and resources for visitor use.

As Eastwoodhill Arboretum is a Charitable Trust, this and many future projects at the arboretum are dependant on securing funding by way of donations, bequests and legacies.
