Winter
Winter is time when most people stay tucked up inside, however it is the time when there is much beauty to see outside. In winter Eastwoodhill is a landscape of surprises and subtle gems. Gone are the spring flowers, summer lushness and autumn fireworks. Instead textures, patterns and forms so often overlooked come to the fore. Piles of leaves litter the ground, much to the amusement of children and the delightful scent of several plants that choose to flower at this time of year. Wintersweet, Chimonanthus praecox, Witch hazel Hamamelis mollis, and Daphne, Daphne odora, catch the senses as you walk past. With Camellia one of Douglas Cook’s favourite trees winter is never bleak with the many Camellia sasanqua and then C. japonica in flower with colours ranging from the purist white to the deepest purple.
